Well, the lights and water are finally back on chez Menzies and we're showered, happy and back at work. There were a few items I just couldn't let go of this week, so despite the late hour, check out some of these great events going on (TOMORROW) and enjoy the chance to get out of the house-- rain or shine! I know I will as we have all been 'camping' at the house together for the last few days and might just have spent enough family time together this week...

Captain Merritt's Hill House Tour

JUNE 8th CAPTAIN MERRITT'S HILL TOUR OF HOMES USHERS VISITORS INTO HISTORIC MOUNT KISCO RESIDENCES!

~ Famous "American Girl" Victorian Among the Featured Homes ~

The third annual Captain Merritt's Hill Historic Homes Tour showcases the distinctive architecture and interior décor of Mount Kisco's stately Colonial and Victorian style homes, all within the village's charming Captain Merritt's Hill area. This year's collection includes seven new-to-the-tour homes, which will be on display from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8th. With the winning combination of distinctive architecture and beautifully decorated interiors, the unique walking tour of homes will once again welcome hundreds of visitors to this turn-of-the- 20th-century gem of a neighborhood in the heart of Mount Kisco, New York.

A highlight of the tour will be the elegant 1877 Second Empire Italianate Victorian on Route 133 that is featured in the American Girl books. With its picture perfect façade and distinctive mansard roof, young girls recognize this majestic Victorian as home to American Girl "Samantha." In the series, Samantha Parkington is an orphan who lives with her wealthy grandmother in Mount Bedford, New York in the early 1900s. This landmark residence was also made famous in the Academy Award-nominated movie Ragtime which starred James Cagney in his last feature film performance.

The Tour's showcased homes, most built in the early 1900s, range from classic English Tudors to charming Colonials to gingerbread-frilled Victorians. These graceful residences boast period details such as towers, turrets and wrap-around porches, bay windows, gingerbread and bric-a-brac, beamed ceilings, carved oak woodwork, plaster (cove) moldings, inlaid floors, and stained glass. Each different in style, the featured homes display stunning examples of enduring craftsmanship not generally found in modern construction.

"It's exciting to showcase such beautiful and historically significant homes right here in our own back yard," said event co-chair and Captain Merritt's Hill resident Jane Balter. "It's a unique opportunity to see the living space and decor of these stately old homes that we've admired for years from the curb."

In addition to showcasing six of the area's most distinctive residences, the event includes a breakfast, a goody bag for each participant, and a fabulously popular raffle open to the community at large. Event proceeds will benefit the Mount Kisco Elementary School Association, a non-profit organization that provides extra-curricular enrichment to the public school's 500 students.

"We're pleased to be able to benefit the Mount Kisco Elementary School's dynamic student enrichment program," said event co-chair Janet Deane, who is also a Mount Kisco Elementary School Association fundraising chair. "Our proceeds provide arts and cultural performances, science assemblies and author visits that enhance the school curriculum."

The community's participating event sponsors include Bedford Magazine, Century 21 Country Living, Clean Ridge Soap Company, Country Willow, Desires by Mikolay Jewelers, Family Facts, The Flying Pig Cafe, Griffin's Landscaping, Hollow Brook Golf Club, Minuteman Press, PepsiCo, Premier Martial Arts, The Pulse Performing Arts Studio, Saw Mill Club, Westchester Magazine and Whirly Girls.

Tickets, which include the tour and a light breakfast, are available for advance sale at $40 and may be purchased at Century 21 Country Living at 291 Main Street in Mount Kisco (914-666-0777). Tickets may be purchased the day of the event for $45. Please call 914-244-8564 for further details. Shadfest!

SUNDAY, May 20th-- join in the fun at Riverkeeper's 18th Annual Shad Festival & Hudson River Celebration

The American shad and its "lilac run" upstream will be celebrated at Riverkeeper's 18th Annual Shad Festival and Hudson River Celebration on May 20. Each year when the lilacs bloom, the shad, whose Latin name means "fish most delicious", make a 150-mile run from the ocean up the Hudson to spawn in fresh waters north of Albany.

American shad was once one of the most abundant fish in the Hudson River, but over-fishing in the early 1900s reduced their population. With industrialization came the dumping of waste into the Hudson, and from the 1940s to 1970s, General Electric discharged toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the river. The once thriving commercial fishing industry was destroyed. Only after 1972 when the Clean Water Act was passed, did the river start to recover. Riverkeeper, the environmental nonprofit whose mission is to protect the Hudson River, has been bringing polluters to justice since 1983, so today the Hudson is cleaner than it has been in decades.

Riverkeeper's Shad Fest will take place Sunday, May 20 from 12 to 5pm (rain or shine) at historic Boscobel Restoration, 1601 Route 9D in Garrison. No pets or smoking allowed. Activities include a falconry show, a Native American dance troupe, boat building, kayaking lessons, fly fishing, yoga for children, puppet shows, storytelling, harnessed tree climbing, environmental education and live music. The Shad Fest will feature shad and shad roe tastings, and delicious gourmet fare with fresh organic foods provided by Whole Foods and prepared by Mt. Kisco Seafood. Admission is $75 for adults, $25 for children ages 9-12, and free for kids 8 and under. Everything is included in the price. Proceeds from the Shad Fest support Riverkeeper's programs to protect the Hudson and the watershed areas.

There will be refreshments, entertainment by "The Bossy Frog Band" and "Constant Wonder," give-a-ways, and more! The whole family can get involved as they exercise and experiment together.

We're asking each Explorer Family to raise $200 for the WCM-- that's just 10 friends donating $20 for a great cause! There will be t-shirts and prizes for those who raise the most money. So come on and "Leap In" and discover what the Westchester Children's Museum will have to offer.
