Since 1971, Mount Kisco Day Care Center, a non-profit organization, has made a commitment to the care and education of families and children by providing quality child care, preschool, and after-school programs. The Center serves children regardless of their ability to pay, with over half of their students receiving scholarship assistance, benefiting children from all ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds.
MKDCC works hard to utilize the newest and most exciting developments in the child care field as well as providing cutting edge, innovative programs in support of child development. Their collaborative program with Family Services of Westchester's senior day program, My Second Home, provides intergenerational activities for the children and seniors, creating effective learning experiences for all ages. MKDCC also runs a literacy program engaging children, their parents and caregivers at different community sites monthly in an effort to promote reading and literacy. The "Edible Education" Program designed and implemented by Deberah Sutter, Executive Chef of the Flying Pig Restaurant, provides children with an education around healthy eating & healthy choices. Students are fed locally grown and farm-fresh foods, taught methods of farming, allowed to grow their own foods on site, and learn food preparation/cooking skills. Together, these programs provide an environment unlike any other in the community.
Expanding upon the concept of Edible Education, the event will be held at Daisy Hill Farm, a beautiful local farm situated on Guard Hill Road and run by Gwenn Brant, which operates a fantastic Farm Stand with locally grown foods. Emmy Award recipient, local jazz artist Isaac Raz will provide the perfect accompaniment for the evening's edible fare. Throughout the evening, guests will be treated to delicious hors d'oeuvres-- a selection of regional farm fresh foods from a variety of local farms including Amawalk Farm, Bobolink Dairy, Cabbage Hill Farm, Daisy Hill Farm, Ronnybrook Farm Dairy and Toad Haul Farm.
Guests will also sample a generous selection of cuisine from a tasting menu provided by cooking demonstrations performed by local chefs and farmers. The demonstrations will highlight local foods and educate guests on innovative approaches to cooking fresh produce and increasing access to healthier foods. Tastings will be provided by the following chefs, restaurants, and farmers: Deberah Sutter, the Flying Pig; 121 Restaurant; Crabtree Kittle House; Alejandro Hernandez, LaCocina Mexicana; Mt. Kisco Seafood; Randy Woodard, Cabbage Hill Farm; Simeon Manber, Connie's Bakery and General Store; and Gwenn Brant, Daisy Hill Farm.
A farmer's market will offer produce, foods, canned vegetables, jams, and baked goods during the evening to create an autumn farm market and harvest atmosphere. Elyse Arnow of Alpaca Tracks will offer wool-spinning demonstrations and sell alpaca wool goods. Through Feed Me Fresh, the sponsors hope to highlight the work being done at the Day Care, the incredible community of small farms in the area, and the work that they are each doing to provide access to quality foods, to save open space, and to educate families around healthy choices.
