Rainbeau Ridge: Farm Fun

Farm Share

Farm Share, based in Larchmont, is teaming up with local farms and milk deliverymen to bring CSA delivery of freshly harvested crops to families in Westchester. Its new CSA delivery service means you can enjoy weekly deliveries of organic and naturally grown produce from a small local farm directly to your door.

"Knowing where your food comes from means a lot these days. Food safety and health issues have really awakened people to the need for good food farmed with responsible methods. Knowing the farm and farmers that grew your tomatoes adds a new dimension to the whole experience and I know its something good to feed my kids," said Gail Brussel, together with her husband Luke, the founders of Farm Share.

With community supported agriculture (CSA), you receive a weekly delivery of goods selected from the farm's weekly harvest. As the season progresses, the harvest changes so you continue to taste and discover new food throughout the year including: tender greens and sugar peas in early spring, ripe strawberries in June, crisp cucumbers as the summer begins and deeply flavored heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, squash and beans as the season unfolds.

CSA is a unique approach to bringing farms and families together for great food and to support small local farms and sustainable agriculture. With CSA you get a share in everything a farm produces for the year and the farmer gets a commitment from the buyer for the whole season. For the families getting the produce it means a year of great food and the opportunity to visit the farm and get to know where your food comes from. For the farmer, it means having the resources to buy seed and equipment and the time to do what they love to do-- farm!

Although it varies a bit from farm to farm, one CSA share has around 10-18 lbs of fresh vegetables per week with many different delicious varieties including outstanding heirloom types not available in stores. A CSA share with home delivery costs less than $35 per week and should provide enough vegetables for a family of four. Half shares are also available. Payment is made for the full season at sign-up.

Rainbeau Ridge Farm

Fun tip of the week?

My four year old has been taking a great "farm class" at Rainbeau Ridge Farm in Bedford Hills and I wanted to share the fun.

His "class" meets once a month to visit with chickens, goats, sheep, turkeys, and more. The farm provides snacks, crafts, and farm related activities for a wide range of age groups. It's a great way to introduce your little ones to farm fresh goods while also building self-esteem and confidence with animals. The farm offers mommy and me classes, drop-off programs, and after-school activities. They run year-round, including some summer camp activities.

As well as fun for the kids, the farm also offers adult cooking classes and has just launched a new cooking series to help teach parents how to begin introducing healthier ingredients into their family recipes.

"Replace, Substitute and Diversify" with Mary Duncan. Join Mary at the farm once a month from 9:30 to 11:30am for Irresistibly Good...Tasty Meals, Good Nutrition!

Classes will be as follows:
Tuesday, March 14th-- Sweets and Treats
Thursday, April 12th-- Savories
Thursday, May 10th-- Sunday Breakfast
Thursday, June 14th-- Outdoor Meals

Sign up for one class or for the whole series! Cost: $50/class or $180 for all.
