To work or not to work...that is the question isn't it?
|
Working moms defending their need to get
out of the house and be themselves for a while...stay
at home moms saying they want the best for their
children and that they can provide the best only by
being at home.
But what if you fall somewhere in the middle-- you
need to feel you are still an individual with talents
outside of the home, yet you still want to be home to
see all of those precious first steps or to greet them
when they get off of the bus?
Certainly a harder situation to find, but the
options
are out there. Local boutiques and
businesses are always looking for good people
and were willing to share their hints with us.
Jill Heller of on the One Boutique,
Mount Kisco

Re-entering the work force can be challenging,
but
here are a few benefits she finds to work that may
ease the transition from home to work:
* You will find productive feelings again,
competing a task and seeing the reward of a finished
job or product
* Giving of yourself and your talents makes a
difference in the lives of others and the community
* Financial rewards are always nice-- the financial
freedom to make your own choices and, of course,
shopping decisions...should you buy that outfit?
Yes, you deserve it and worked for it!
* Businesses are looking for qualified, talented,
smart women who can contribute to the well being of
their companies. If you worry that you have been out of
the 'market' for too long, know that local businesses
are always looking for motivated, self-assured staff.
Many local businesses are run by women like
yourselves who understand the challenges of
parenting!

Oak Atkinson, Tumbalina Cards www.tumbalina.com
Oak runs a gorgeous hand-designed card
business. She suggests:
* Find the right fit (between you and your
employer) Personalities are important.
* Make a list of things that are important to you
and that you want in a job (e.g. Flexibility in work
hours, etc.) Make sure all expectations can be fulfilled
before you take the position.
* As much as possible overcommunicate with
your new or potential employer. Let them know
restrictions and find out their tolerance for flexibility
before getting in to the job-- this will save headaches
later!

Gretchen Menzies, EssentialMom.com
My Hints? Sure.
* Find something you love to do and follow
through. Make the job fit your lifestyle-- whether
through interests, hours, or flexibility.
* Expand your horizons, take a new position
whether it's at a level below where your career was
before babies-- find a new interest and learn new
skills.
* Keep your feet in the door. Although you might
want to be home to be with the babies, find something
to do on the side (even if it's volunteering) to keep your
mind busy and your resume fresh. When the kids go
to school, you'll need to find something to do with all of
that free time.
* Ask around, you'd be surprised how many
businesses need bright women-- the pay check
might not be what you're used to, but it's still fun!
