Talk
about money?  The horror!

I was taught from an early age that ladies do not talk about money.  I excitedly translated this to: great, I won't worry about it either, and shuffled off to enjoy my next gymnastics class while my brothers worried over their times tables and math classes.

I never quite caught on in math, never understanding what the fuss was all about-- I could add well enough, knew my multiplication tables, squeaked through my high school math requirements and never looked back.  I could balance a checkbook and buy my groceries, what else did I need during college?  Well, when friends started getting jobs in finance, banking, businesses, etc. and I started earning a salary I had no idea what to do with, I began to understand where I'd missed out.  I had somehow neglected to attend some important 'club meetings' that my brothers and guy friends certainly attended and now I was at a total loss.  I have worked hard to try to understand stocks, savings, and more, but continue to struggle.  I have come to the conclusion that I need a Business 101 class and wonder how many other of you ladies need the same.

So, I have arm-twisted my friend, Kathy Boyle, president of Chapin Hill Advisors, (if you actually watched them,
you'd have seen Kathy on those finance shows-- CNBC and Bloomberg-- where she not only stands up to the 'guys' but can take complicated finance 'stuff" and turn it into easy to understand, common sense tips) into leading us in a finance workshop of sorts.  We propose a monthly format of educational meetings for ladies interested in learning more.  Take control of your financial health-- it's as important as that gym membership!  We promise it won't put you to sleep, cause you anxiety, or make you feel inadequate...come learn how to be smart, savvy and confident about your money.

Join us for an introductory informational session to assess your interests, talk about what you are dying to know about money, and to get a feel for our plans.  Friday, November 2nd, 10am in Bedford Corners, NY.

Pediatric Halloween Drive
batfor Memorial Sloan Kettering

It's that time of year again...hard to believe that Halloween is nearly upon us. As you gear up your family for the sugar-induced excitement, Sloan Kettering asks you to consider helping out with their annual Halloween program.

The Children's Committee at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is responsible for working with pediatric department staff to try and make life a little easier for the pediatric patients and their families. The committee organizes a number of activities and events for the children and provides services for the patients and their families to make their time at the hospital a little less stressful.

Each year, the committee hosts an annual Halloween party for the pediatric patients and their families and is holding a costume drive to round up costumes for the children at the hospital. They try to provide costumes for siblings, as parents and siblings of patients are encouraged to participate in the festivities. As you might imagine, as the parent of a sick child, shopping for Halloween costumes can be pretty far from your mind.

As you pick up a costume for your children, please consider picking up an extra one or two for the children at the hospital. The patients range in size from infant to teen, so any size (infant through adult) will work. We are also delighted to have Halloween "props." These items (wigs, silly noses, makeup kits, freaky teeth, etc.) are great for kids who might be too "grown up" or ill to don a complete costume.

Because many of the children are immune-compromised and strict infection-control measures must be observed, we are only able to accept NEW costumes and props. We are trying to round up approximately 300 costumes, so every little bit helps!

All costumes must be collected by October 20th so that we can get them into the hospital and distributed to the kids in time for the Halloween festivities. Costumes can be dropped off at Mrs. Monogram, 629 Old Post Road, Bedford Village. For more information, contact Kelley at Skjohnston@aol.com.

Celebrate the season at Teatown's annual Fall Festival

Enjoy nature and celebrate autumn at Teatown's annual Fall Festival, on the grounds of beautiful Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining. This year's festival will be held Saturday October 13, from 10 am to 4 pm and focuses on family fun while promoting an appreciation for our natural environment and our surroundings.

There will be so much to do...carve a pumpkin, dress a scarecrow, take a scenic hayride, learn about our raptors, meet farm animals, ride the SavATree zipline, dance to musical entertainment and go on a scavenger hunt. All this while learning about nature during the autumn season. And so much more!

Festival-goers can shop at the Teatown Marketplace which will be bustling with Teatown Tea, Tom Cat Bakery breads, apples, cider and other seasonal goodies.

Free parking and shuttle buses will transport participants from the IBM parking lot on Route 134, just east of the Taconic Parkway.

Teatown offers a children's Funpass for $20, which includes admission and passes for six activities, including a hayride, face painting, pumpkin carving and crafts. General admission is just $8 for adults and $5 for children.

All funds raised at the Festival will directly benefit Teatown's environmental education programs. For more information about the Festival, or for directions, please call Teatown at (914) 762-2912, ext. 110, or visit www.teatown.org.

Teatown Lake Reservation, 1600 Spring Valley Road, Ossining, NY, is a private, non-profit 834-acre nature preserve and education center spanning Yorktown, Cortlandt and New Castle. The property has two lakes and 15 miles of hiking trails over woodlands, meadows, streams and marsh habitats. Teatown's mission is to conserve open space and to educate and involve the regional community in order to sustain the diversity of wildlife, plants and habitats for future generations.
