Summer Days at Stepping Stones Museum
Summer Day Camp at Stepping Stones 2007: A Unique Summer Experience for Kids
Summer Days is a unique museum-based camp program for children from kindergarten to 2nd grade. Children may choose from four different weeks of fun and stimulating programs (a different theme each week) or choose a combination of weeks. Young campers can enjoy messy art, learning about the human body, the wonders of weather and science experiments. The programs, which will run from July 23 to August 17, expose children to a rich variety of activities. New this year will be an extended-day option. The camp runs daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children who opt for the extended-day program stay until 3 p.m.
Museum Mess Makers is the first week of the camp program from July 23 to 27. Creating a mess is a good thing in a week of "hands-on" art and science activities. Campers will mash pulp to make paper from recycled materials, mix solids and liquids to create a gas and excavate artifacts with toothbrushes among other activities.
In Storm Chasers, which runs from July 30 to August 3, children will join the Stepping Stones team of dedicated weather watchers and explore the wonders of weather's powerful events. Campers will create a tornado, make snow, become part of a moving hurricane and learn how they can help protect our delicate ecosystem.
Bruises, Odors, Digestion and You. From August 6 to 10, the theme is Bruises, Odors, Digestion and You. Kids will love learning about the human body, especially when it comes to body chemistry: Why feet smell after being inside sneakers all day? What makes your stomach growl? Campers will get to know their bodies inside and out by going on an in-depth exploration of our newest exhibit, Healthyville.
Young Detectives. From August 13 to 17, campers will become Young Detectives. When mysterious events begin to happen at the museum, Stepping Stones sleuths will question, observe and experiment with clues to explain strange happenings.
The cost for a summer camp week is $220 for a half day or $200 for museum members or, for the extended day, the cost is $355 or $325 for members. Financial assistance is available. Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts, in the Huntington area of Long Island, and celebrating its 40th Anniversary, is America's largest summer arts day camp, annually hosting 1600 children ages 6-18 from throughout the Tri-State area. Air-conditioned buses transport students-- in Westchester, from New Rochelle, Scarsdale and Rye. Students from nearby Connecticut come to Westchester for pickup. The 2008 season runs June 30-August 15. Usdan, called by Time Magazine "One of the most unique camps in America," offers more than 40 programs in the arts and chess on its magnificent 200-acre woodland campus, plus on-site performances by distinguished artists. No audition is needed for most programs, and about one-third of students attend on scholarship.
